Dr. A and his team see patients of all ages with dental concerns. One serious concern that should not be ignored is periodontal disease. Philadelphia area patients who are developing conditions such as this are advised to visit a dental professional for an evaluation and treatment. Treatment for gum disease may include treatment for gum recession, as this often occurs in conjunction with periodontal infections.
Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is caused by bacteria and infection of the gum tissue. When the tissues are infected, they become red, inflamed, and irritated. Gums may bleed during brushing and flossing, and over time, may become painful. Gum recession often occurs as the soft tissues shrink and pull away from the teeth. Irreversible damage may occur, including the loss of teeth caused by the loss of bone.
Treatment for gum recession varies, depending on its severity. Patients must also target the condition that is causing the recession before they can fix the damage that has been done. Periodontal disease is often treated with scaling and root planing. This procedure removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from all surfaces of the teeth, including the roots. During this time, the dentist may also apply antibiotics underneath the gum tissue for immediate treatment, while prescribing oral antibiotics to fight the infection from the inside out whenever possible. Once periodontal disease has been targeted and patients have the infection under control, then the gum recession itself can be addressed. Gum recession is often improved with gum grafting. This requires gum tissue to be sutured into place around the teeth to fix the gum line and keep the tooth roots covered.
